Egypt: Court Suspends Decree Allowing Military Arrests

By | Africa

An administrative court ruled on Tuesday to suspend a decree granting military police and military intelligence officers the right to arrest civilians.

The ruling followed deliberations on a number of lawsuits filed by activists, human rights defenders and politicians who regarded the decree as a stark violation of the Criminal Procedure Code and the law of military judiciary.

The court stated that this decree contradicts with the constitutional principles since the 1923 constitution until the March 2011 constitutional declaration.
