KLM marks 65 years in Ghana, strengthening trade links and global connectivity

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is celebrating 65 years of uninterrupted service to Ghana, an achievement that underscores the airline’s long-standing contribution to Ghana’s aviation sector, economic development, and global integration.

Since touching down in Accra for the first time on November 1, 1960, KLM has maintained a continuous presence in the country, becoming one of Ghana’s most reliable international carriers and a key partner for both business and leisure travellers.

Founded in 1919, KLM is the world’s oldest operating airline still flying under its original name. Its global network of more than 160 destinations has positioned the carrier as a crucial bridge between regions and a catalyst for international trade, tourism, and investment.

Today, KLM operates daily flights between Amsterdam and Accra, providing seamless onward connections to Europe, North America, Asia, and beyond. Over the years, the airline has supported bilateral cooperation between Ghana and the Netherlands, facilitating trade and investment while enabling new economic and educational opportunities for thousands of travellers annually.

In addition, KLM has invested in local talent through employment, training, and knowledge transfer, and has contributed to community initiatives focused on education, sustainability, and women’s empowerment.

The airline says it remains committed to expanding its footprint in Ghana and West Africa through four strategic pillars:

  • Sustainable aviation through fuel-efficient aircraft, biofuel innovation, and climate-friendly technologies.
  • Customer experience driven by digital innovation and personalized service.
  • Diversity and inclusion across its workforce and customer base.
  • Partnership and connectivity to ensure Ghana remains linked to key global markets.

“KLM customers are at the heart of our service,” said Isabelle Indeweij Gerlings, Air France–KLM Country Manager for Ghana.

“We continue to invest in new fleet and upgrade our existing aircraft, including full-flat business class seats. Our role is to maintain vital air connectivity that supports sustainable tourism and development. We thank Ghana for 65 years of partnership and look forward to many more.”

The celebration also followed KLM’s 106th global anniversary, reaffirming the airline’s appreciation for its Ghanaian customers, staff, and partners who have been part of its journey.

For more than a century, KLM has built a reputation for connecting nations and supporting economic growth. As the airline marks 65 years in Ghana, it remains dedicated to flying cleaner, quieter, and more efficiently, continuing its mission to connect people and markets for generations to come.
