The highly anticipated Mini Fruit and Vegetable Fair, organized by the Horticulture Business Platform (HBP) in partnership with the Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) and the Netherlands Embassy, was launched with great interest at the Fafraha Community Senior High School in Accra on Wednesday the 22nd of May, 2024.<\/p>\n
The event accorded with the visit of Her Excellency Liesje Schreinemacher, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation of the Netherlands, to Ghana. The Minister’s visit was intended to actively engage with local authorities and stakeholders in the agriculture sector, to foster discussions on trade investments and youth entrepreneurship and also to formalize agreements between the Netherlands and both the Ghanaian Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) and IDH.<\/p>\n
Notable attendees included His Excellency Jeroen Verheul, the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Ghana, alongside local ministry experts and key stakeholders in the horticulture sector. The fair featured a diverse array of high-value products, including organically grown fruits and vegetables from over 15 companies, highlighting the innovation and sustainability efforts of Ghana’s horticulture sector. The companies had the opportunity to discuss their achievements and challenges with the minister. Her response was one of admiration, reaffirming the Netherlands’ dedication to promoting trade relations with Ghana. She highlighted a significant investment of around 4 million euros in agriculture, aimed at empowering local farmers in Ghana to embrace scalable and sustainable practices.<\/p>\n
The Minister also toured the Adenta community garden, funded by the Netherlands Embassy. The community garden is an initiative aimed at promoting horticulture and farming as viable businesses, while also serving as a practical ground for disseminating knowledge in horticulture and advocating for best agronomical practices.<\/p>\n
The Horticulture Business Platform, a project under the Private Sector Development Initiative of the GNBCC, also supported by the Dutch Embassy, leveraged on the event to reiterate its objectives to promote the business interests of its members and to unify all sector players in horticulture. Additionally, the platform seeks to amplify activities in the sector, establish a network of buyers, agents, suppliers, and key government contacts in Ghana and the Netherlands, and expand its reach to the rest of Europe.<\/p>\n
The strategic partnership between the HBP and IDH, facilitated by the Netherlands Embassy, aims to foster market access development by convening stakeholders in the Horticulture sector. This collaboration seeks to bring producers and markets together to plan production and supply in alignment with the interests of all stakeholders in the sector.<\/p>\n
In summary, the Mini Fruit and Vegetable Fair, organized through collaborative efforts, marked a significant stride in promoting sustainable agriculture in Ghana. With widespread participation from various stakeholders, the event emphasized a shared dedication to advancing the horticulture sector.<\/p>\n
