This marks a sharp increase from the GH\u00a216.7billion surplus recorded in third quarter-2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ads.thebftonline.com\/www\/delivery\/lg.php?bannerid=0&amp;campaignid=0&amp;zoneid=133&amp;loc=https%3A%2F%2Fthebftonline.com%2F2026%2F04%2F15%2Ftrade-surplus-surges-to-gh%25C2%25A247-2bn-in-q4-2025%2F&amp;referer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F&amp;cb=2844510cf6\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thebftonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-14-141104.png?resize=384%2C178&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-267067\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In dollar terms total trade was valued at US$15.1billion, with exports accounting for&nbsp; US$9.7billion and imports US$5.5billion \u2013 resulting in a trade surplus of US$4.2billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Export products<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exports remained heavily concentrated in a few primary commodities led by gold, cocoa and crude petroleum. Gold continued to dominate, generating GH\u00a272.7billion and accounting for 66.9 percent of total exports\u2026 although its share declined from 73.4 percent in the previous quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cocoa beans ranked as the second-largest export at GH\u00a29.6billion, followed by crude petroleum at GH\u00a27.6billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thebftonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-14-114802.png?resize=465%2C225&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-267060\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe cumulative exports for Q1 to Q4 2025 were largely driven by gold bullion, representing more than half (62.9%) of total exports over the period, followed by cocoa beans (GH\u00a234.4billion) and crude petroleum (GH\u00a233.2billion). Together, these three products accounted for more than three-quarters (79.8%) of total export earnings during the four quarters of 2025, indicating a high concentration of exports in a few primary commodities,\u201d the report stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Import products<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the import side, the structure remained relatively diversified, though still dominated by mineral fuels and oils. The two leading products \u2013 motor spirit (super) and gas oil \u2013 together accounted for GH\u00a210.9billion of total imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other imports included used vehicles and crude petroleum, reflecting continued demand for energy and transport-related products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cumulatively, for the Q1to Q4 2025 period gas oil was the leading import product, accounting for more than one-tenth (11.2%) of total imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thebftonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-14-114940.png?resize=432%2C170&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-267061\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Destination and origin<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asia remained Ghana\u2019s leading trade partner, accounting for 53.4 percent of total exports and 46.8 percent of imports during the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAsia and Europe have consistently remained Ghana\u2019s main export destinations, together accounting for more than three-quarters (78.3%) of total exports in Q4 2025,\u201d the report stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thebftonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-14-115139.png?resize=348%2C188&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-267063\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the country level, India and the United Arab Emirates were top export destinations with earnings of GH\u00a227.2billion and GH\u00a224.8billion respectively. Other key export markets included South Africa, Switzerland and the Netherlands<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China retained its position as Ghana\u2019s largest source of imports, supplying&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; GH\u00a214.3billion worth of goods and accounting for 23.3 percent of total imports. The United States, Netherlands, Belgium and Nigeria also featured among the leading import partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thebftonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-14-115033.png?resize=448%2C188&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-267062\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Full year<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the full year, export performance remained largely driven by gold \u2013 which accounted for 62.9 percent of total export earnings. Cocoa beans and crude petroleum followed, with the three commodities together contributing nearly 80 percent of exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the import side, gas oil remained the leading product over the period, accounting for 11.2 percent of total imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thebftonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-14-132546.png?resize=418%2C184&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-267065\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Trade with Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report noted that: \u201cGhana\u2019s trade with African countries has expanded steadily, possibly driven by regional integration initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trade with Africa remained favourable in the fourth quarter, with Ghana sustaining a surplus as exports to the continent reached GH\u00a218.9billion compared to imports of\u00a0 GH\u00a29.5billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gold dominated exports to Africa, accounting for 57.1 percent followed by crude petroleum. Shipments remained highly concentrated, with South Africa emerging as the leading destination and accounting for 63.8 percent of exports to the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thebftonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-14-115343.png?resize=380%2C227&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-267064\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collectively, the top five export destinations \u2013 South Africa, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire and Togo \u2013 accounted for over 90 percent of exports to Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the import side, trade was largely driven by mineral fuels and oils, with crude petroleum, gas oil and motor spirit together accounting for more than half of total imports from the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nigeria remained the largest source of imports from Africa, contributing 33.6 percent, followed by Morocco and South Africa \u2013 with the top-five import origins accounting for over 80 percent of total imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thebftonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-14-140323.png?resize=391%2C292&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-267066\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Real and nominal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the strong nominal performance, the data point to underlying structural pressures in the real trade position. In real terms, Ghana recorded a trade deficit with exports valued at GH\u00a230billion compared to imports of GH\u00a231.7billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This suggests that the nominal surplus was driven largely by price effects \u2013 particularly in gold \u2013 rather than a significant increase of export volumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trends in gold exports indicate that growth in export earnings continues to reflect higher prices rather than expanded output, highlighting potential vulnerabilities in the external sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GSS noted that Ghana\u2019s reliance on a narrow range of primary commodities exposes the economy to global price fluctuations and supply shocks, while dependence on a
