The Ghana Netherlands Business and Culture Council (GNBCC) officially brought the first phase of its Private Sector Development Project (PSD 1) to a close with a formal ceremony celebrating four years of impact, collaboration, skills development, and private sector growth in Ghana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Held in Accra, the PSD 1 Closing Ceremony brought together programme beneficiaries, alumni, partners, mentors, facilitators, industry stakeholders, development practitioners, and representatives of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ghana. The event served to reflect on the achievements of the various initiatives run throughout the period and provided a networking platform for stakeholders to explore future opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Made possible through the steadfast support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ghana (EKN Ghana), PSD 1 was meticulously designed to strengthen Ghana\u2019s private sector. Over the course of four years, the programme implemented a range of interventions aimed at improving business competitiveness, creating employment opportunities, enhancing export readiness, strengthening entrepreneurial ecosystems, and fostering sustainable economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The PSD 1 Project Portfolio<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n
The success of the overarching PSD 1 initiative was driven by four distinct, targeted programmes, each addressing a unique pillar of private sector development:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n
Horticulture Business Challenge (HBC):<\/strong> Designed to empower the next generation of agricultural leaders, this project supported young professionals and tertiary students by fostering youth engagement, innovation, and practical skill-building within the horticulture value chain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Women in Business (WIB):<\/strong> A dedicated initiative focused on promoting and supporting women-led enterprises. The programme provided female entrepreneurs with the critical resources, mentorship, and capacity-building necessary to scale their operations and overcome systemic barriers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
SME Support Desk:<\/strong> Acting as a crucial resource centre, this project focused on strengthening small and medium-sized enterprises by offering tailored business advisory services to improve their local competitiveness and operational resilience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Dutch Export Academy (DEA):<\/strong> Aimed at bridging the gap between local production and international markets, this project enhanced the export and trade readiness of Ghanaian businesses, equipping them with the knowledge and standards required to succeed globally.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Learning, Capacity Building, and Networking<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Prior to the official ceremony, all project alumni engaged in specialised workshops designed to provide practical knowledge in their specific areas of need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Entrepreneurs and alumni from the Women in Business, SME Support Desk, and Dutch Export Academy participated in a robust Access to Finance Workshop. This session was facilitated by esteemed representatives from Access Bank, Pangea Africa, Old Mutual, and Absa Bank. Discussions centered on financing opportunities, investment readiness, financial planning, risk management, and strategies for business sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Simultaneously, alumni of the Horticulture Business Challenge attended a Career Development Workshop facilitated by PM Renaissance. This session explored crucial topics including career planning, professional development, employability skills, workplace readiness, and personal branding, equipping young participants with practical tools to navigate their career pathways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Opening Proceedings and Keynote Addresses<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n
The official ceremony was moderated by Joana Pomaa Chemel and Susanne Roelofsen Afum, who gracefully welcomed all invited guests and alumni to the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Delivering the welcome address, His Excellency Jeroen Verheul, Ambassador of the EKN Ghana, reflected on more than four and a half years of productive cooperation between Ghana and the Netherlands. He highlighted the significant achievements recorded through the PSD 1 programme’s various pillars and emphasized that the initiative has not only strengthened individual enterprises but also contributed to broader ecosystem development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The highlight of the evening, which received a resounding applause was the Ambassador’s announcement of the official approval for PSD 2. He expressed optimism that this next phase would further deepen collaboration, expand opportunities for SMEs and youth, and build upon the strong foundation already established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reflecting on the Journey<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Delivering remarks on behalf of GNBCC, General Manager Hilde Famaey reflected on the milestones achieved and the profound lessons learned. She highlighted the critical role that relationships and partnerships play in driving sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Programmes don’t change sectors, people do. Relationships do,” she remarked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Using a poignant analogy, she compared business growth to riding a bicycle: “Running a business is like riding a bicycle; you have to constantly pedal to maintain momentum. The moment you stop, it comes to a halt.” Noting that entrepreneurs operate in a constantly evolving environment, she reminded the audience that “the market never sleeps.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Referencing the popular proverb, “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together,” she encouraged entrepreneurs to embrace partnerships as a pathway to long-term sustainability. She also noted that the upcoming PSD 2 phase will focus heavily on strengthening integration across all programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Voices of Impact: Alumni Testimonials<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n
One of the most inspiring segments of the ceremony was the sharing of testimonials from programme beneficiaries and partner organisations. Representatives from all alumni groups were invited upstage where they reflected on how the initiatives had transformed their personal and professional journeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An HBC alumna, Litela, shared her experience of joining the programme with only a project idea and leaving with greater confidence, practical skills, industry exposure, and a clearer career direction. She expressed gratitude to GNBCC, mentors, facilitators, and partners for their guidance and support throughout the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Desmond from Holland Green Tech commended the enthusiasm, commitment, and willingness to learn demonstrated by HBC participants during training sessions and industry engagements. He highlighted the practical mindset and positive energy participants brought to the programme, noting that these qualities contributed significantly to the success of the initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
