A woman has been charged over the death of a 'lovely friendly and intelligent' 11-year-old girl who was hit by a car outside her school.

Marianne Haboc was pronounced dead at the scene in Rochdale on the afternoon of October 1 last year.

Sobia Aftar, 33, of Rochdale, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and appeared for a brief hearing at Manchester Magistrates' Court this morning.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Ms Aftar only spoke through an interpreter to confirm her name and address and did not enter a plea to a single count of causing Marianne Haboc's death by dangerous driving.

Following her death, Marianne's parents paid tribute to the keen gymnast who was a pupil at St Patrick's RC Primary School.

They said: 'Marianne, our beautiful daughter, was a natural-born leader that could motivate friends to unite and do the same together regardless of age, race or belief.

Marianne, who lived locally, was remembered as a popular girl and a talented gymnast

'It was her own goal to be a top pupil of the year before leaving primary school. To achieve this, she had a little plan by coming to school early so she could meet more young pupils to play with and to improve her pro-activeness and relationship to them and her teacher.'

At the hearing, district judge James Hatton denied Aftar bail and remanded her into custody.

The case has been sent to for a hearing early next month.

A fundraising page was set up in memory of Marianne who was a member of Rochdale Olympic Gymnastics Club.

Staff at the school and Rochdale Olympic Gymnastics club paid tribute to the popular youngster, while friends and their parents were moved to tears reading tributes to her during the school run.

Many families stopped to leave flowers, cards and teddy bears close to the scene of the tragedy behind a row of shops.

She was remembered by neighbours as a 'lovely, friendly, intelligent little girl'.

Following the tragedy, a Range Rover remained in the middle of the road before it was eventually removed on the back of a low loader.

Onlookers told how the horrific incident happened as children were leaving the school for the day.

One neighbour told how teachers from St Patrick's ran out to the scene after hearing what had happened.
