Introducing Member: Material Innovation Center (MIC)

The Ghana Netherlands Business and Culture Council (GNBCC) is please to introduce the business community and partners to Material Innovation Center (MIC), who have been active GNBCC members since last year.

From overlooked waste streams to commercially viable materials, Material Innovation Center is working to turn circular innovation into practical solutions with lasting local value.

What happens when materials that are often treated as waste are looked at differently?

For Material Innovation Center (MIC), that question is at the heart of its work. MIC focuses on taking sustainable innovations with positive social impact from the lab to commercial scale. A key part of that work involves finding new uses for undervalued organic and industrial waste streams and transforming them into high-value applications with real commercial potential.

The organisation has been active in Ghana for the past three years, building its presence and partnerships while working towards the establishment of a formal local business entity.

Its work in Ghana is closely connected to local collaboration. MIC works with team member Matorwmasen Clement (Kwaku) and his organisations, Green Gold Ghana and Dream Village. Together, they are exploring ways to create value locally through sustainable material transformation while keeping communities and their economic opportunities at the centre of the work.

This local approach forms part of a much wider international network. MIC has a team of 11 professionals with more than 30 years of combined experience in the field. The organisation operates and develops innovation hubs across Europe, Africa, South America and South-West Asia, connecting ideas and experience from different regions while developing solutions suited to local contexts.

For MIC, innovation does not stop when an idea works in a laboratory. The bigger challenge is getting that idea into the real world, where it can become commercially viable, create opportunities and make better use of materials that might otherwise go to waste.

As MIC continues to grow its footprint in Ghana, the organisation is open to conversations and partnerships with businesses and stakeholders interested in sustainable materials, circular innovation and local value creation.
