Trade grew nearly ninefold to US$52.5b from 2004–2025 …as exports drive record GH¢148.3bn surplus

Ghana’s merchandise trade has expanded nearly nine-fold in dollar terms over the last 21 years, increasing from US$6 billion in 2004 to US$52.5 billion in 2025, according to the Business & Financial Times (B&FT).

The significant growth in merchandise trade has been driven by stronger exports, which pushed the country to record its largest trade surplus on record, amounting to GH¢148.3 billion.

The development highlights the substantial expansion of Ghana’s trade activity over the period, with exports playing a key role in driving the country’s trade performance in 2025.

The increase from US$6 billion in 2004 to US$52.5 billion in 2025 represents a major expansion in the value of merchandise trade over the 21-year period.
