Exploring Horticulture in Practice: HBC Week 3 Recap

Last Friday, the HBC team and participants spent the day gaining practical skills and insights into Ghana’s Horticulture Sector, through a program designed in collaboration with Holland Green Tech.

The day began with a tour of the Defamercist Centre of Excellence, a newly established greenhouse and training farm located on the University of Ghana campus. This wasn’t just a tour, but an immersive learning experience. Participants were taken through the various stages of production leading up to  the market, gaining a deeper understanding of greenhouse farming systems and practices. The session was highly interactive, with participants asking critical questions that extended well beyond the presentation itself.

From there, the group moved to the Adenta Community Garden for the next phase of the program, which was themed “Farming as a Business.” The introduction and agenda-setting were led by Deborah Anobil, who walked participants through the day’s plan: a tour of the garden, a session on vertical farming with Farmitecture, and a hands-on practical session in seed nursing and transplanting.

Unfortunately, as the session was underway, the rains set in during the Farming as a Business presentation, forcing the program to pause. This meant that the much-anticipated practical training segment could not take place as scheduled. However, the participants will continue with these practical sessions next week.

Despite the weather interruption, the day was a valuable experience, combining learning, exposure, and dialogue around the future of horticulture in Ghana. The HBC team remains grateful to Holland Green Tech, Defamercist Centre, and Farmitecture for their contributions in making the session impactful.

As the program continues, participants look forward to building on this foundation and applying these learnings in their business case projects and future careers in horticulture.
