Mastering Business Finances and Pensions: Women in Business Workshop

After several virtual sessions, the Women in Business Mentorship Program hosted its first in-person workshop on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. This fourth session focused on Mastering Business Finances and Pensions.

The event took place at Airport West Hotel from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., in collaboration with Citadel Accounting Services (CAS) and People’s Pension Trust (PPT). The session brought together mentees from the program, who showed up in great numbers with enthusiasm and thoughtful questions, eager for an insightful and practical learning experience, and based on the feedback received, they got exactly that.

Kicking off the session, Project Manager Tracy Abbey Mensah warmly welcomed participants and led a reflective check-in on their mentorship journeys so far. Mentees shared heartfelt and positive feedback, emphasizing how transformative their mentorship experiences have been.

The first session was led by Mr. Kofi Polley, COO of PPT, who presented on Understanding Pension Plans. His engaging and down-to-earth delivery helped demystify pensions for participants, transforming mindsets and motivating immediate action. Many mentees downloaded the PPT app or dialed USSD Code 789111# to start their pension savings journey on the spot.

Mr. Polley’s session explored the myths and realities of pensions, the Ghanaian Pension Act 2008 (Act 766), and a detailed breakdown of Tiers 1, 2, and 3. He also introduced PPT’s voluntary pension scheme, which allows contributors to grow their savings through two accounts — a savings account and a retirement account, both earning interest over time. His message was clear and empowering: securing your financial future starts today.

Building on the strong foundation of financial awareness, the second session shifted focus to Financial Management, facilitated  by Akwasi Dampson and his colleague, Catherine from Citadel Accounting Services, who guided mentees through five insightful modules — Introduction to Financial Statements, The Income Statement (Profit or Loss), The Statement of Financial Position, The Cash Flow Statement, and Integration and Decision-Making. With the theme “Understanding Key Financial Statements and Their Relevance in Decision-Making,” the facilitators broke down complex accounting concepts into simple, relatable examples. The session was highly interactive, allowing mentees to ask questions both within and beyond the modules.

Citadel Accounting Services also provided templates for tracking assets and liabilities, shared case studies, discussed common financial mistakes entrepreneurs make, and offered practical advice tailored to small business realities.
