Strong institutions key to Africa’s development – Elsie Appau-Klu

Africa’s long-term development depends on strong institutions, sound public policies and effective governance, according to Elsie Appau-Klu, Technical Advisor to the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

Speaking after receiving the Excellence in Public Policy and Governance Award at the 16th African Achievers Awards in London, Ms Appau-Klu emphasised that Africa’s ability to finance its own development rests on strengthening public trust in state institutions. She noted that effective institutions encourage compliance, enabling governments to mobilise domestic resources for critical investments in infrastructure, healthcare, education and job creation.

She also highlighted ongoing reforms at the GRA aimed at modernising tax administration through technology, broadening the tax base, enhancing transparency and promoting voluntary tax compliance. According to Ms Appau-Klu, fair and people-centred tax systems are essential to supporting sustainable national development.

Encouraging greater commitment to public service, she called on public servants to uphold integrity and urged young Africans to view governance as a powerful tool for driving economic transformation and improving lives across the continent.

The African Achievers Awards recognise individuals and organisations that have made outstanding contributions to governance, public service and policy development across Africa.
