Transforming Tomato Production in Ghana: Can Farmers Double Their Yields?

Tomato remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s food system and a critical income source for smallholder farmers. Yet national production continues to fall short of demand, with average yields stagnating at approximately 8 tonnes per hectare, well below the attainable potential under improved production systems. This persistent gap sustains reliance on imports and reflects deeper structural inefficiencies across the value chain.

The constraints are well established: limited access to high-performing hybrid seeds, inconsistent agronomic practices, dependence on rain-fed systems, and weak water management infrastructure. Evidence from agricultural development research consistently shows that productivity gains in such systems are driven primarily by improved genetics combined with better crop management, rather than expansion of cultivated land.

A practical pathway to closing this gap is already emerging through farmer-led transformation models. A recent case from the East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer Foundation highlights how a farmer in Bono East, Mathew Mensah, significantly improved productivity and profitability by adopting best farming practices. Through proper variety selection, improved transplanting, trellising, balanced nutrition, and responsible pesticide use, he achieved strong yields and realized a 157% return on investment, demonstrating that smallholder tomato farming can be both productive and commercially viable when supported by the right practices. This reinforces a critical point: seed alone is not sufficient. However, improved hybrid varieties such as Diva F1 from East west seed, provide the foundation upon which productivity gains can be built. Developed for tropical conditions, Diva F1 combines high yield potential, strong plant vigor, uniform fruit size, and extended shelf life,traits that directly address both production and post-harvest inefficiencies.

When integrated into a structured agronomic system,comprising quality nursery management, optimal spacing, balanced fertilization, trellising, and effective pest and disease control,this variety can significantly increase output. Field-based programs implemented by East-West Seed Knowledge Transfer have demonstrated that combining improved seed with best practices can increase productivity by more than 50%, moving farmers from roughly 9 tonnes per hectare toward 14 tonnes and beyond.

Water management remains the second critical lever. Increasing rainfall variability continues to undermine yield stability and cropping intensity. The adoption of irrigation systems,whether boreholes, drip irrigation, or rehabilitated schemes,enables dry-season production and stabilizes supply. Under such controlled conditions, hybrid varieties like Diva F1 express their full yield potential, creating a pathway toward doubling current national averages.

Equally important is post-harvest management. Losses in Ghana’s tomato value chain are estimated to be substantial, often exceeding 20–30%. The improved firmness and shelf life associated with hybrid varieties reduce these losses, increasing marketable yield and farmer profitability. As demonstrated in farmer-led models, careful harvesting, proper packaging, and improved handling can further enhance returns and market competitiveness.

Availability and knowledge transfer are decisive for scale. East-West Seed, through its commercial arm, has ensured the availability of improved varieties like Diva F1 while simultaneously building farmer capacity through Knowledge transfer arm. Since 2023, thousands of farmers across regions such as Bono, Ahafo, and Bono East have been trained in sustainable vegetable production practices, creating a multiplier effect through demonstration plots and peer learning systems.

The implication is clear: doubling tomato yields in Ghana is not theoretical,it is operational and already being demonstrated at farm level. The combination of improved hybrid seeds, disciplined agronomy, and effective water management creates a scalable model for transformation.

Diva F1 sits at the center of this model as a high-performing genetic solution, but its true impact is realized when embedded within a system of best practices. The opportunity now is to accelerate adoption, strengthen extension linkages, and align market systems to fully capture the value of increased production.

The question is no longer whether yields can double, but how quickly Ghana’s tomato sector can mobilize to achieve it.
