Unlocking Finance for Ghana’s Horticulture Sector: A Collaborative Dialogue

On Thursday, February 12, 2026, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, along with its partners, Resilience BV, MDF West Africa and the Ghana-Netherlands Business and Culture Council (GNBCC) convened with key stakeholders across the horticulture sector to address one critical question: How do we unlock finance to accelerate the growth of Ghana’s horticulture sector?

The dialogue brought together representatives from government, financial institutions, input dealers, Farmer-Based Organisations (FBOs), and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening the sector.

Over the past years, The Netherlands has worked closely with Ghanaian partners to professionalize the horticulture sector, making it more productive, climate-smart, sustainable, profitable, and attractive. Through capacity building, improved sector coordination, and strengthening the enabling environment, strong foundations have been laid.

With improved skills, stronger coordination, and a more supportive environment, access to finance has emerged as the primary barrier to scaling, particularly for small-scale commercial horticultural growers. Addressing this constraint will be central in the years ahead.

The morning session focused on practical solutions including, Farmer-Based Organisation financing, Fintech innovations, Value-chain finance and SME financing models.

In the afternoon, the team reflected on lessons from The Netherlands’ horticulture track in Ghana. They examined what has worked in skills development, sector coordination, and partnerships, and identified the following next priorities:

• Technology adoption
• Youth engagement
• Public-private collaboration
• Stimulating growing consumer demand

Unlocking finance is not just about capital; it is also about creating the right partnerships, instruments, and confidence to drive a sustainable sector transformation.
