SNBN has issued an urgent call for Dutch citizens abroad to contact VVD and JA21 representatives as coalition talks continue. The aim is to secure progress on dual nationality and other key issues affecting over one million Dutch citizens living outside the Netherlands.

As we enter 2026, there is little time for a quiet start to the year. The Netherlands is still in the midst of coalition negotiations, and recent developments have created a new political reality for Dutch citizens abroad.

Following earlier appeals directed at CDA and D66, the VVD has now formally joined the coalition talks, significantly increasing its influence over key policy areas — including dual nationality, SNBN’s core advocacy issue. SNBN extends its thanks to everyone who already contacted VVD representatives in recent weeks.

In addition, JA21 may also join the coalition. Even if a minority government is formed, parliamentary support from other parties will still be required. This makes engagement with VVD and JA21 especially critical at this stage.

What SNBN Is Asking

SNBN is issuing a second and urgent appeal for Dutch citizens abroad to contact VVD and JA21 representatives, regardless of party membership, to ensure that the interests of Dutch citizens living outside the Netherlands are reflected in the new coalition agreement.

The primary objective is clear:

An agreement on opening up dual nationality in 2026.

Key Advocacy Priorities

SNBN continues to advocate for several critical issues affecting more than one million Dutch citizens abroad, including:

• Dual nationality and restoration of involuntarily lost Dutch citizenship, in line with most European countries
• Digital voting trials from abroad, to ensure fair participation in elections
• Simplified passport renewals, particularly in regions with limited consular access
• Access to Dutch bank accounts, essential for healthcare, education, and financial administration
• Preservation and support of Dutch-language education abroad, benefiting both families and the Netherlands

Additional concerns include pensions, naturalisation for non-Dutch partners, maintaining a strong consular network, and further digitalisation of government services.
